Experience Requirements for CPA Certification

Gaining accounting experience is a necessary component of earning your CPA certificate. In Minnesota, you must gain one year of experience in addition to meeting the other requirements for becoming a CPA which includes passing the CPA exam, completing 150 college credit hours, and passing the self-study ethics exam.

Your one year of experience can be in:

  • Public accounting
  • Industry
  • Education
  • Government

In order for your work experience to count towards earning your certificate, it must be verified by a CPA.

Can I work while sitting for the exam?

Yes! In Minnesota you can work while sitting for the CPA exam and count that time towards your one year of experience. Paid internships can also be applied to your one year of experience. Unpaid internships do not count towards your one year of experience, however.
