Last updated October 16, 2007 Active or inactive, you must renew your CPA certificate with the Minnesota
Board of Accountancy (BOA) by December 31 each year. Sole proprietors and firms
must also renew their firm permits.
Please note, CPAs are now certified. The term license no
longer applies. We encourage members to
renew early and renew
online if possible. The online form eliminates errors, since you can't
submit an incomplete form. Online renewals are typically processed more quickly.
If you renew online, there is an additional $1.50 fee. Individual
certificate renewals
Complete the online certificate renewal form and submit it to the BOA before December
31. Online renewals are typically processed in just over a week. If you've held
your certificate for less than three years, you must renew using the
downloadable paper form from the BOA website.
Renew as early as you can. If your renewal reaches the BOA on
December 31, but the BOA doesn't process it until after December 31, you will still
be considered out of compliance. If the form is incomplete, you will
be uncertified until you return a complete form and it is approved. This gap in
certification is a potential liability risk. Additionally, firm permits
cannot be issued until all individual certificates are renewed. You will be charged a late fee of $50 if you send your
renewal after December 31.

Find your
certificate (license) number in the BOA database Sole proprietor firm permits
Sole practitioners in Minnesota must have a firm permit, even if they are not
doing compilations, audits or reviews.
You may need a firm permit if you:
- Provide attest services and issue attest reports
- Issue compilation reports
- Use the title "Certified Public Accountant" or "Certified Public
Accountants"; the abbreviation "CPA" or "CPA"; or any other title,
designation, words, letters, abbreviation, sign, card or device tending to
indicate the entity is a CPA firm.
If you are found violating this BOA rule
1105.4200,
the BOA can take action against you. This can also cause a potential liability
risk for your firm.
First time applicants should register for a firm permit by completing the
sole proprietor firm permit application. Renewing sole proprietors should use the designated form to
renew.

CPA firm permit renewal
Firms can't receive their CPA firm permits to practice until all CPAs working
for them have renewed their individual certificates. This can cause a
potential liability risk for your firm.
If you submit multiple paper individual certificate renewals under one check, even one incomplete
form will cause all the renewals to be considered incomplete. Most problems
arise when a certificate holder submits an incomplete paper renewal.
'Incomplete' usually means the form lacks a signature or payment.
Be sure to check all individual renewal forms to ensure they are complete
before mailing. If possible, have your CPAs renew online before applying for
a firm permit.
