MNCPA PERSPECTIVES

Hitting the green: Good for you, good for business

Jun. 13, 2018  |  Geno Fragnito

I’m going to state the obvious: Minnesota summers are short, and the list of things to do during this limited time is long. The number of days to spend in the great outdoors are precious and few, and everyone hopes Mother Nature doesn’t have other plans on the day of their outside event.

If you know me well, you know one of my favorite activities (outside of lobbying for the profession at the State Capitol) is golf. Luckily for me, I get invited to some great fundraising golfing events during the summer. Nothing beats the warm sun and great company while improving your golf swing.

There is more to a golf event than just supporting a cause or the humbling experience of chasing a golf ball into the grass, trees or water (it’s okay to admit it, we’ve all been there). A day at the course also creates great networking opportunities. Where else can you spend four to five uninterrupted hours talking to individuals you may only know from the occasional business meeting?

I have found political and fundraising golf events to be more than just a day away from the office. Golf events have provided me with invaluable opportunity and time with legislators. We discuss current legislation, ideas for future legislation and the profession’s position on possible issues. We have a great time while also discussing what is important to CPAs and business in Minnesota.

You never know where the next great idea will come from. The golf course is the perfect place to conduct business.

Have I convinced you? Good! Then make plans to attend the MNCPA’s first-ever golf outing on Tuesday, Aug. 28.

The Wilds Golf Club in Prior Lake has reserved the entire course for MNCPA golfers. Block your day from business as usual, and instead, take that business outdoors.

As I pointed out earlier, it’s not often that you have an afternoon reserved for the sole purpose of meeting peers in both industry and public accounting. So, grab your sun screen, business cards and golf clubs, and join me and more than 100 CPAs for an afternoon of “work.”

I look forward to seeing you on Aug. 28!
