MNCPA PERSPECTIVES

Membership: A transition resource that's just right

Oct. 5, 2018  |  Linda Wedul

Transition is where excitement happens and risk peaks. Whether it’s in business, sports or personal milestones, a transition is a tricky thing to navigate.

Transitions come in many flavors. From big and bold like merging two companies together, to minor and low-key like … OK, there is nothing minor and low-key about transitions. Even a small change, like changing your password, can result in a rash of four-letter words.

Two big transitions that come to mind for me are an unexpected job opportunity or finding out your job is being eliminated. In the last week, I met two MNCPA members who are in the midst of job transitions -- one planned and one unplanned. These career transitions are not unique to just the CPA profession. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average worker will hold 10 jobs before the age of 40. That is 10 transitions!

How do we navigate unexpected transitions? We've all tried the wing-it approach, but the unpredictability and course correcting undoubtedly bumps up stress levels. So, then we try the intense-planning approach. All seems great until something doesn't go according to plan and the anxiety meter goes rocketing up again.

What is needed is the Goldilocks plan, the just-right plan. A level of planning that prepares you to make decisions with confidence yet enough flexibility to adjust when things don't go exactly as planned.

Here’s something to include in your just-right plan: join and engage in your professional association.

The members I recently met were using resources available to them because they are MNCPA members. They were engaging, making connections and networking. They were filling gaps in their knowledge and building up their expertise. Their membership is helping them through their career transitions.

Here are two more great reasons to join the MNCPA in October. First, membership is half price. The second reason is you will then be eligible to attend the 2018 Leadership Summit, which is focused on fine-tuning your coaching style. Develop skills, earn 4 CPE credits, meet new people and enjoy a happy hour. Need more convincing? Your first month of membership will more than pay for itself when you attend the Leadership Summit because it is free for members.

No matter what transition you’re tackling, belonging to a professional association falls into the just-right plan.
