Did you know? New info about the CPA exam's score-release timetables

Apr. 10, 2017  |  Stephanie Schmidt

Out with the old and in with the new when it comes to the CPA exam and there’s something you should know.

There’s been talk for months about the changes to the CPA exam that reflect a shift from memorization to an emphasis on critical thinking and analysis. Well, the time has come. The changes went into effect April 1.

The new CPA exam now has a greater focus on testing cognitive skills. As a result, there are more task-based simulations and fewer multiple choice questions. This information has been covered by everyone from the AICPA and NASBA, to review course providers to the MNCPA.

Here’s what you may not know.

The score-release timetables have been rather consistent for the past few years. Scores have been released in about four waves per testing window, enabling exam-takers to receive their scores promptly. However, this will change significantly for the Q2-4 testing windows. This is important to know for planning purposes.

If you take the exam in April or May (Q2), you won’t receive your scores until Aug. 16–18. So, rather than waiting about two weeks for your results, you may be waiting more than two months.

If you take the exam from July 1 through Sep. 10 (Q3), you’ll receive your scores Sep. 22. So, while you’ll receive them sooner than Q2, scores still won’t be released in waves. And, the same holds true for Q4; if you take the exam October through Dec. 10 (Q4), you’ll receive your results Dec. 22.

Again, this is important to know as you plan your exam schedule. The delayed score release for Q2 can have a significant impact on a traditional exam plan, and may mean you have to make some adjustments. If you’re not sure, the best thing you can do is talk it through with a review-course provider. They’re well-versed in timeline strategy and can help make sure you stay on track.
