MNCPA PERSPECTIVES

The magic behind Tax Campaign

Nov. 13, 2017  |  Carolyn LaViolette

Those who know me well know that I love the Harry Potter books. I grew up reading them out loud with my younger sister, and now I’m sharing them with my six-year-old daughter. I love getting lost in the adventures of Harry, Ron and Hermione, and the magical realm in which they live.

That being said, there’s one thing that really bugs me about the series. There are four houses that witches and wizards are sorted into, and Slytherin House is described as the house made up of -- simply put -- real jerks. You can’t convince me to believe that every 11-year-old sorted into Slytherin is destined for evil. Why do I care? Because I took a quiz to see which house I belong to, and I’M a Slytherin!

Slytherin needs some better public relations (PR, as it’s referred to in the biz). You know, someone who talks it up, educates people on what it’s all about and persuades people to show their Slytherin pride! Unfortunately for me, it’s fruitless to spend my time doing PR for a fictional house from a fictional school made up of fictional people.

Fortunately for everyone, I get to use my PR chops on behalf of the profession!

Every tax season, the MNCPA launches its annual Tax Campaign, a PR effort where we educate the public about CPAs and their areas of expertise. Using digital advertisements, media stories and client brochures, we promote the profession as the most trusted, ethical and educated when it comes to tax planning and other year-round services.

Here’s what’s on the docket for this year’s campaign:

  • Digital advertising: Google AdWords, Bing advertising and Facebook ads will direct people to the MNCPA CPA Referral Service, where they can search for a CPA by location or specialty.
  • Media stories: Tax tips, blog posts and infographics will be shared with newspaper, radio and TV news outlets throughout tax season.
  • Client brochures: These popular marketing brochures promote the services you provide, such as tax planning, financial statement reviews and audits, and estate planning. Members can order as many as 100 copies of each brochure for free!

Want in on some of the PR magic? Here are three things you can do today to get involved:

  1. Order your brochures and share them with current and prospective clients.
  2. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and share our posts.
  3. Make sure your firm comes up in search results in the CPA Referral Service by taking out a listing.

There may not be much I can do for Slytherin, but at least I can share the story of how amazing our members and the profession are. And that, to me, is quite magical indeed.
