Allodium Investment Consultants in Minneapolis has been certified by CEFEX (Centre for Fiduciary Excellence, LLC). Allodium is the first Minneapolis-based investment advisory firm to earn the certification.
The accounting firms of Morken, Eckberg & Co., Chtd. in Mankato and Steiner Financial LLC (with offices in both Hutchinson and Winthrop) merged Jan. 1. New owners and partners Joel Eckberg and Glen Steiner have purchased the Morken firm from longtime owners Chuck and Janet Morken, who will continue working with the firm as employees after the merger. The firm will operate as Morken Eckberg Steiner LLC.
Smith Schafer & Associates, Ltd. and Blanski Peter Kronlage & Zoch, P.A. merged their firms, effective Jan. 1. The combined firms will operate under Smith Schafer's name and will continue to operate out of the firm's combined office in Golden Valley.
Longtime MNCPA member Jack W. Carlson passed away in December. He was 81.
Carlson, a society member for 51 years, was known for his specialization in estate and tax planning. In 2014, he was named an MNCPA Life Member.
During his decades-long involvement with the MNCPA, he spent many of those years involved with the Legislative Issues Committee. Carlson also served as the chairs of the Estate & Personal Financial Planning Conference and the Tax Conference Task Force.

Charles (Chas) J. McElroy, CPA retired at the end of 2016 as the chief quality officer for CliftonLarsonAllen LLP. He had more than 30 years of experience in public accounting in the financial reporting and quality control of accounting practice fields.
Chas was also a fervent supporter of the profession and volunteer through the MNCPA. A former society board chair (1997-98), Chas also served on, among others, the PAC Board of Trustees, the Legislative Issues Committee and the Peer Review Committee. He received the MNCPA Distinguished Service Award in 2014, the society's highest honor. Chas also authored articles and served as an instructor for many years. The MNCPA wishes Chas well in retirement.
Chas already picked up his first post-retirement gig by being appointed to the newly created Legislative Salary Council, which is tasked with determining the salaries of state lawmakers. Chas was appointed by Supreme Court Chief Justice Lorie Skjerven Gildea.
Betsy O'Berry, CPA served as one of Minnesota's 10 presidential electors on Dec. 19. O'Berry, selected at her congressional Democratic-Farmer-Labor convention, was one of 538 Americans selected as electors in 2016.
