CPAs are unfortunately in the news for negative reasons far too frequently. Discuss some recent ethics scandals and unveil how and why the unethical or illegal behavior occurred. Examine the reasons why it was unethical, what should have been done to prevent it, why bad behavior persists and what actions may be required to reduce unethical behavior in the profession.

Major subjects

  • Case studies highlighting unethical behavior -- embezzlement, self-dealing, conflicts of interest and faulty oversight
  • Reasons why CPAs act unethically
  • Legal and ethical reforms -- are they addressing ethical problems or are other interventions needed?

Learning objective(s)

  • Understand recent examples of unethical behavior and what led to those actions
  • Understand why unethical behavior persists and explore whether legal/ethical reforms have addressed ethical problems
