Broadening Pathways to Licensure

Updated January 2024

The issue

The financial stability of individuals, businesses and governments depends on the services provided by CPAs. The demand for CPA services continues to grow while those choosing the profession continues to decrease. Market forces and demographics will continue to impact the number of CPAs available to complete the ever-growing demand for services.

Legislation introduced in 2023 will carry over to the 2024 legislative session. Discussions will continue during the interim with legislative hearings expected when the 2024 session begins in February.

Why you should care

CPAs provide a wide array of services, including tax, audit and advisory services. The variety of clients is just as broad. CPAs are trusted advisers and provide services to bring certainty to financial statements that are relied on to ensure money is accounted for correctly.

Talking points

  • Broadening the pathway to licensure maintains a requirement to pass the CPA exam.
  • Broadening the pathway to licensure allows more practical experience and creates opportunities for a candidate to learn professionally.
  • Broadening the pathway to licensure is one piece of a larger solution to ensure the pipeline of future CPAs is available to complete the work required by governments, financial institutions, businesses and individuals.

What you can do

Support legislation broadening the pathway to CPA licensure by including an option for individuals to choose 120 hours of college education and complete two years of work experience.
