From permits to press: Remembering why you're a member
March 6, 2018 | Stephanie Schmidt
I’m coming up on my 14-year work anniversary at the MNCPA (I clearly started when I was 16). Joking aside, this past year has been one of the most exciting and memorable years.
It’s not because we launched new programs (although we did).
And it’s not because we created a customer service department to better serve our members (which we have).
And it’s certainly not because we had a sell-out Young Professionals Group season (although we did).
It’s because of all the unique ways in which MNCPA staff have dedicated their time and talents to serve MNCPA members and advance the profession.
Here’s what I mean by that.
Protection // Firm permits
You may recall reading about MNCPA staff making calls last year to members at firms who hadn’t renewed their individual certificate, and were in danger of having their firm permits revoked. This year, we continued sending multiple alerts to MNCPA members who hadn’t yet renewed their certificate, letting them know about that they may be in danger of having their firm permit automatically revoked. What was exciting about this? Our message worked! The number of firms in danger as we approached the March 1 deadline was in the single digits -- dramatically lower than last year.
Advocacy // CPE rule changes
The Board of Accountancy proposed CPE rule changes in 2017 that, as originally written, would have substantially limited the type of continuing education CPAs could take. Realizing the negative impact this would have on members, particularly those in business and industry, we sprung into action, alerting members to the proposed changes, and asking them to write letters to the BOA. The result -- members stepped up in droves. In the end, the BOA revised their proposed rules using our suggested language and limitations, resulting in a far better scenario for CPAs.
Reputation Building // Tax reform
Changing tax regulations have caused confusion all around. Who better to clear up that confusion than CPAs, right? The MNCPA communications department recognized this opportunity and is working tirelessly to position CPAs as the experts on tax reform in the public eye -- with great success! Since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed in late December, we have placed MNCPA spokespeople in 15 media interviews, ranging from television and radio, to local newspapers and online publications.
These are just a few of the things that happened this year.
So, while it’s wonderful to launch a new program like the Small Business Advisory Day (and it was), or celebrate new CPAs with nearly 500 new CPAs, friends and families at the Spring Recognition Dinner (which we did), these subtle opportunities to serve our members have been every exciting and rewarding!
Whether you’re finishing up month-end or you’re knee deep in tax season, take just a few minutes to renew your MNCPA membership. You may have access to resources, education and an established network. But with your membership, you have our staff time and dedication to alert you about important regulatory requirements, watch out for changes impacting your certificate, and discover opportunities to enhance the profession.
