Minnesota Society of Certified Public Accountants (MNCPA) statement

Addressing federal conformity in 2018 session

Posted Feb. 22, 2018

In response to recent discussions at the Legislature regarding federal conformity, Jeff White, chair of the MNCPA board of directors, submits the following statement on behalf of the association:

The MNCPA and its members support tax policy that simplifies the filing process, increases taxpayer compliance, reduces complexity, and improves the efficiency of tax administration for all involved. This is why we’re asking the 2018 Legislature to adopt federal conformity, while also considering its impact to individuals and businesses, as early as possible this session.

Legislators will face many competing priorities as they debate what is best for Minnesota. Good tax policy needs to be at the top of that list. Without any conformity changes, Minnesotans will face an increasingly complicated and costly filing process next year. Taxpayers and their CPAs need and deserve certainty to make financial plans and decisions for their families and businesses. These decisions will help continue to grow Minnesota’s economy.

Our members are available to help policymakers better understand the effects of federal conformity, what adjustments will keep the state competitive, and what the changes will mean for Minnesotans.
