In memoriam

Former MNCPA Executive Director Clair Budke passed away May 21. He was 90. Budke served as MNCPA executive director for 33 years before retiring in 2001 and was named an honorary MNCPA member in 2000.  MNCPA President and CEO Linda Wedul started with the MNCPA under Budke’s watch, who was the second person to hold the position.

“His era brought unique challenges quite different from those facing modern accountants, yet he maintained the absolute respect, trust and prestige that defines the accounting profession,” Wedul said. “Throughout his 33-year legacy, Clair’s steady leadership ensured that the MNCPA served as a true community home for CPAs and always put the needs of our members first.”

In his written farewell to members in the April 2001 Footnote, Budke reflected on the changes to the profession and reveled in the constant — the lasting friendships he made with dedicated CPAs.

“The CPA profession is very different from what it was in 1968 when I started,” Budke wrote. “Over the years, your profession has become much more complex and competitive, yet singularly and collectively, CPAs have met every challenge. The CPA designation has always been admired, and through years of growth and change it continues to be held in high esteem by the business community and the general public.”
