Snow shuts down Capitol; CPA Day rescheduled

Snow shuts down Capitol; CPA Day rescheduled Sometimes, Mother Nature goes for the knockout blow.

Late last week, as many local meteorologists predicted a historical, multi-day snowfall, we went through the usual Minnesota playbook for weather-related incidents: denial, anger, acceptance, adjustment.

So, earlier this week, as the formidable weather drew nearer, we made the call to postpone the annual CPA Day at the Capitol from this week to sometime after the tax filing deadline.

Well, come Tuesday, state officials decided to shut the Capitol down for the remainder of the week anyway, so we were just ahead of the curve.

So, why am I telling you about this event that didn’t happen this week? Because it’s an opportunity for you to join us in a couple of months to help engage with legislators on the issues important to you, your businesses and your clients.

As a trusted community adviser, legislators look to the CPA profession to help them better understand the policies they debate and to help them better understand the effect on Minnesota and Minnesotans.

One way for you to help shape public policy by is attending CPA Day at the Capitol. CPA Day offers a unique opportunity for the profession to collectively meet with legislative leaders and state officials, and individually meet with legislators to talk about the issue important to the profession.

Developing relationships with state legislators is important for many reasons, but one that sticks out to me is the fact that legislators set the rules you must follow every day as a licensed CPA in Minnesota. What better group to have in your professional network?

MNCPA legislative agenda

We’ll be looking for people to join the conversation when CPA Day at the Capitol is scheduled at a to-be-determined date in late April. Legislators will still be debating the state’s budget and a tax bill, so there will be a lot to talk about. Stay tuned!
