J2. Handling Troublesome IRS Correspondence

Each year, the IRS mails nearly 200 million letters, notices and statements to citizens and businesses. With the wide variety of notices we face, it’s no surprise they cause mass confusion, misunderstanding and anxiety for both citizens and tax professionals. To make matters worse, the IRS announced it is reinstituting the mass mailing of millions of notices after shutting down its outgoing mailing program for years during COVID-19. Learn how to identify and respond to the five categories of enforcement notices the IRS uses, including correction notices, nonfiler notices, under-reporter notices and collection notices. Recognize what constitutes final notices that carry Collection Due Process appeals rights, and what does not.

Staying current with the ever-changing tax legislation is a challenge for both seasoned veterans and newcomers to the industry. Examine recent changes to tax law from a practitioner’s perspective. Explore a mix of new tax issues and areas of the code that tend to be misunderstood in a practical and straightforward way. Understand the differences in basis calculation between S-Corps and partnerships. Recognize when an owner may have debt basis.
