The case of the Green day problem
Ethics
Charles Selcer, CPA, MBA | June/July 2022 Footnote
Editor's note: Updated May 25, 2022
Paris Green, CPA (inactive) retired from her public accounting firm in 2019, but she has maintained her inactive status since then. She no longer needs to take CPE by virtue of her inactive status.
However, for 2020, she did not file her Form 1040 by Oct. 15, the deadline with
an extension.
Q: Is this an ethical violation given her inactive status?
A. Yes. Part 3 of the Code of Professional Conduct applies to CPAs who are neither in public practice nor in business, like Paris. At 3.400.030, it is noted that Paris still needs to file her Form 1040 timely to avoid an ethical violation.
