Converting Your CPA Certificate from Inactive to Active
CPAs in Minnesota may hold an active or inactive certificate. There are differences between active and inactive certificates.
Inactive CPAs may convert their certificate to active status at any time during the year by earning 120 continuing professional education (CPE) hours and applying to the Minnesota Board of Accountancy (BOA).
To convert to active CPA status, follow the steps below.
1. Confirm your current certificate status with the BOA if you are unsure where you stand.
2. Earn 120 hours of CPE credit, including 8 hours of ethics, within the past 3 years.
- MNCPA members: use the CPE Log tool to track your hours.
3. Complete the CPE Reporting Form found on the BOA website.
4. Send the completed form and necessary renewal fees to the BOA.
5. The BOA will send you a new active certificate within 10 days.
Tips
- You can convert to active at any time. You do not need to complete hours by the June 30 deadline or wait to convert during the certificate renewal period.
- You do not need to submit documentation for CPE with the conversion application. Documentation is required only if you are selected for audit.
