Job Summary
The Controller is responsible for financial reporting in concern of the Company’s Midwest farming businesses located in North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Nebraska. Interfacing with management as well as external stakeholders such as farm partners, audit/tax professionals, and lenders will be important areas of responsibility. Some management reporting will also be involved. Maintenance and improvement of financial/accounting systems and timely and accurate generation of financial statements prepared consistent with GAAP is important. Establishing and maintaining a system of accounting and proper internal controls is also important. This position will supervise a team of professionals and work closely with the Midwest Regional Manager – Finance, Accounting and Business Process Manager, operations, treasury, FP&A, and holding company financial reporting personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • 7+ years of work-related experience leading and managing within the accounting field
  • Proven people management skills
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Exceptional communication skills, verbal and written
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • 15% travel required
  • Candidate must have valid work authorization and be able to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship

Controller

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinates the business office workflow; ensures compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, local, state and federal statutes and board policy; assists in the supervision and coordination of business office staff.
  • Coordinates the budgeting process; aids staff with balances and codes throughout the year; manages financial reporting.
  • Prepares and arranges for the internal audit.
  • Coordinates the external audit.
  • Assists in the coordination of the district’s accounting functions.
  • Maintains the Uniform Financial Accounting and Reporting Standards coding system; trains staff on the coding system and financial software.
  • Assists with making projections and forecasting estimates.
  • Attends various meetings as a representative and member of the department.
  • Assists with financial system and upkeep.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of accounting and auditing.
  • Thorough knowledge of local, state and federal school funding.
  • General knowledge of school funding sources and budgeting methods and techniques.
  • Self-motivated and collaborative team player.
  • Strong communication skills, ability to communicate complex items.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong customer service skills, able to communicate in a positive, professional and responsive way.

Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field required; CPA license preferred
  • 3-5 years experience with school finance preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Salary: $68,000-$74,000 DOQ.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Preparing monthly Financial Statements according to GAAP using a workflow cloud-based ERP system
  • Preparing and managing weekly cash flow
  • Preparing project-based billing, recording deferred revenue and WIP for accurate revenue recognition.
  • Providing monthly variance analysis
  • Leading the annual budgeting process
  • Processing bi-weekly payroll, managing benefits and insurance
  • Supervising staff, liaison to the bank, and tax preparers
  • Overseeing contract administration, overheard allocations, and providing project reporting to Project Teams to achieve gross/net margins
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting
  • Financial Management role in public accounting/ industry
  • Hands on with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Problem solving skills; identifying solutions
Preferred
  • Experience in a project-based and/or professional services company
  • Experience with cloud-based ERP system such as Deltek Vision or other
