The MNCPA attends AICPA Spring Meeting of Council and Annual Members Meeting in Washington D.C.
MINNEAPOLIS (June 19, 2023) — Seven members of the Minnesota Society of Certified Public Accountants (MNCPA) attended the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) Spring Meeting of Council and Annual Members Meeting in Washington D.C from May 23-25. While there, members promoted key issues in tax and accounting currently impacting the industry, meeting with the offices of all 10 of Minnesota’s congressional delegation.
During their visit to the U.S. Capitol, members discussed the Fiscal State of the Nation resolution, which would require the comptroller general to address a joint session of Congress and present the fiscal state of the nation, as well as participating in discussions around incorporating accounting into STEM education curriculums and expanding the allowed uses of 529 educations savings plans, among other topics.
The MNCPA members who attended were:

- Charles Esler, CPA, former MNCPA board chair
- Katie Gabriel, CPA, former MNCPA board chair
- Carolee Lindsey, CPA, chair of the MNCPA Legislative Issues Committee and PAC
- Rachel Polson, CPA, former MNCPA board chair
- Marcus Rien, CPA, co-chair of the MNCPA Young Professionals Group
“As an incoming AICPA council member, I was impressed with the level of engagement and dialogue among the other council members and the AICPA,” said Cedergren. “Additionally, the ability to meet with legislators on Capitol Hill was encouraging, as we were able to share issues that are important both to our members and the profession as a whole.”
Gabriel echoed these sentiments.
“It's powerful to come together with so many leaders who are all committed to advancing our profession,” she said. “Building the accounting pipeline continued to be a central conversation. We were able to meet with several of our representatives and their legislative assistants and it was promising to hear that they would be receptive to our advocacy to include accounting as part of STEM education.”
