Corey Butler, MNCPA communications manager | October/November 2023 Footnote

Editor's note: Updated October 1, 2023

It should come as no surprise that someone who works in public education has the volunteering spirit sewn into their DNA.

Kris Blackburn, the fiscal services director of South Washington County Schools, is a 2022-23 recipient of the Volunteer Excellence Award because of her willingness to go above and beyond in her MNCPA volunteer commitments, which honors those who have volunteered with the MNCPA for at least five years and provided leadership or significant contributions.

"As a proud MNCPA member, I feel very honored to be recognized by the MNCPA and my peers, especially for this award because it stems from service to our profession," Kris said.

Kris has held the chair position for the Government Accounting & Auditing School Quality Review Committee
for several terms, coming prepared for every meeting. She has also been involved in conferences outside of the task force by moderating sessions and presenting content.

Between her title as the go-to resource for the committee and her estimated dozens of hours of volunteer time, it's easy to see why Kris received this recognition.

When asked about any memorable experiences, two came to mind for Kris: people and snow.

"The most rewarding for me has been the relationships I've developed through this involvement," she said. "I've been fortunate to have served with many amazing people who have generously shared their time, knowledge and expertise. The snow has been memorable, too! I recall driving on side roads deep with snow to ensure I made the meeting one year; more than 10 inches of snow couldn't stop us that year!"

As for her CPA peers who may be considering giving back to the profession? Kris said get moving.

"Just do it!" she said. "With a wide variety of opportunities available, I challenge every member to find one volunteer opportunity with the MNCPA in whatever capacity best suits your passion or skillset. The gift of your time and knowledge is a gift worth giving.
